Age & Disability Exemptions

Extra tax break for residents 65 and older or disabled

Homeowners who are 65 or older, or who receive Social Security disability benefits, can get an additional $60,000 school tax exemption.

On top of the regular homestead exemption, Texas requires school districts to cut another $60,000 from the taxable value of a home if the owner is 65 or older or is legally disabled. This stacks on top of the $140,000 base exemption.

Being disabled for this purpose means you qualify for federal Social Security disability benefits. Local taxing units in Victoria County may add their own local option exemptions on top of these. Apply through VCAD at victoriacad.org. Check the current deadline, since it can change.
