Groundwater in Motley County Is Managed by a Special District
If you plan to drill a water well in Motley County, you need to work with the Prairielands Groundwater Conservation District, which regulates how much water can be pumped.
Texas uses groundwater conservation districts to manage underground water. Motley County falls under the Prairielands Groundwater Conservation District. The Texas Legislature created that district in 2009. The district can require permits before you drill a new well. It can also require permits if you want to pump more water than you already do.
This matters if you are buying rural land. It also matters if you are building a home outside city limits or running livestock on property without public water. If you are buying land, ask two questions. First, are the existing wells permitted? Second, what are the district's pumping rules? Check the Texas Water Development Board's district directory to confirm the current boundaries and contact information before you act.
