Homestead Exemption

Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your Tax Bill

If your home in Motley County is your main residence, you likely qualify for a state homestead exemption that reduces what you owe in property taxes.

Texas law requires every school district to exempt $140,000 of your home's value from property taxes. If you are 65 or older, the school district must exempt an additional $60,000. Other local taxing units — like the county — may also offer exemptions on top of that.

To get the exemption, file an application with the Motley County Appraisal District. The general deadline is before May 1, but check with the district for current rules. You only need to file once as long as you keep living there. Contact the appraisal district at 806-983-5256 or look up the form at the Texas Comptroller's website.
