Water Wells
A local water district oversees wells in Menard County
The Menard County Underground Water District regulates groundwater wells and requires permits for most new wells above domestic or livestock use.
Much of Menard County relies on groundwater, mostly from the Edwards-Trinity (Plateau) aquifer. The Menard County Underground Water District is the local authority that oversees those wells. A five-member elected board sets the rules.
Wells used only for a single household or for livestock are generally exempt from permitting under state law. If you plan to drill a well for irrigation, commercial use, or large-scale production, you will likely need a permit from the district first. If you are buying land with an existing well, check with the district about registration requirements. Contact the district at P.O. Box 1215, Menard, TX 76859.
