Water Wells

A groundwater district oversees wells in Uvalde County

If you plan to drill a water well in Uvalde County, you must work with the local groundwater conservation district.

Uvalde County sits over underground water. The main source is the Edwards-Trinity (Plateau) aquifer. Other water-bearing layers include the Leona Gravel, Austin Chalk, and Buda Limestone. An aquifer is rock or soil underground that holds water you can pump.

A local agency controls how much water can be pumped here. It is the Uvalde County Underground Water Conservation District (UCUWCD). One aquifer is not in its hands. The Edwards (Balcones Fault Zone) aquifer is run by a separate state agency, the Edwards Aquifer Authority.

The UCUWCD limits irrigation pumping to two acre-feet per acre each year. Call the UCUWCD before you drill a new well. They will tell you what permits you need. For current rules and forms, contact the UCUWCD or check the TWDB groundwater district page.
