Water Wells and the Mesquite Groundwater District

Only some parcels in northern Childress County are in the Mesquite Groundwater Conservation District. If yours is, you may need a permit before drilling a water well.

The Mesquite Groundwater Conservation District (MGCD) is a local agency that protects underground water. It was set up to protect the Seymour and Blaine aquifers in this part of the Rolling Plains.

The district mainly covers Collingsworth and Hall Counties. In 2007, individual landowners in northern Childress County petitioned to join. Only those specific parcels were added. Not every parcel in Childress County is in the district.

If your land is inside the district, you likely need a permit before you drill a new well. District rules cover well spacing, how much water you can pump, and well registration.

If your land is outside the district, state rules from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) still apply to well construction.

Before you drill, contact MGCD directly or check the TWDB groundwater district list. This will tell you whether your parcel is covered.
