Water Supply
Montgomery County Is Shifting Away from Pumped Groundwater
A county-wide program is moving large water users toward surface water from Lake Conroe to reduce pumping from underground aquifers.
Pumping too much groundwater makes the land slowly sink. This is called subsidence. To limit that risk, cities and utilities in Montgomery County must cut how much they pump from the Gulf Coast Aquifer. The San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) runs a Groundwater Reduction Plan (GRP). The GRP treats water from Lake Conroe and pipes it out as an alternative to groundwater.
SJRA runs a treatment plant that makes Lake Conroe water safe to drink for the region. If you get water from a city or utility in Montgomery County, your supplier is likely part of this program already. Learn more at sjra.net/grp.
