New water wells in Burleson County require a permit from the Post Oak Savannah GCD

The Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District covers all of Burleson County. It requires permits and registration for new water wells.

Burleson County sits above two important underground water sources. The Carrizo Aquifer supplies many home wells and some large public water systems. The Brazos River Alluvium Aquifer feeds irrigation and home wells in the county's eastern lowlands. Both are managed by the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD). The POSGCD is the local agency that oversees groundwater use in Burleson and Milam counties. It was created in 2001.

If you plan to drill a new well, you must get a permit from POSGCD before you start. All wells must be registered with the district. Owners of existing wells must keep up with any production reporting that is required. You can download well permit applications at posgcd.org. Phone: 512-455-9900; email: admin@posgcd.org.

Burleson County is also part of Groundwater Management Area 12. This is a regional planning group run by the Texas Water Development Board. Water availability goals are set at the regional level, not just the county level. If you are buying rural property and plan to use a private well, ask your licensed well driller about current permit rules. Check that water is available before you close on the land.
