How to lower your property tax bill with a homestead exemption in Burleson County
If Burleson County is your primary home, you can file for a homestead exemption that lowers your property tax bill.
Texas law requires every school district to give homeowners a $140,000 homestead exemption. That amount is cut from your home's taxable value before the school tax rate is applied. Other local taxing units in Burleson County — the county, cities, and special districts — can also offer a local exemption of up to 20 percent of your home's value, with a minimum of $5,000.
To get the exemption, fill out Form 50-114. File it with the Burleson County Appraisal District (BCAD). The appraisal district is the local office that sets your home's taxable value. BCAD is at 111 E. Fawn St. in Caldwell. You will need a Texas driver's license that shows the property address. The deadline to file is April 30 of the tax year, but late applications may still be accepted. You only apply once. The exemption renews each year as long as you live there.
Extra exemptions are available if you are 65 or older, disabled, or a surviving spouse of a first responder. BCAD posts all forms at burlesonappraisal.com. The Texas Comptroller's website lists every exemption type available statewide. Check there first, then call BCAD if you have questions.
