Groundwater & Water Wells
Wharton County Has Its Own Groundwater District for Water Wells
The Coastal Bend Groundwater Conservation District regulates water wells in Wharton County and draws from the Gulf Coast Aquifer.
If you plan to drill a water well on rural property in Wharton County, you need to deal with the Coastal Bend Groundwater Conservation District (CBGCD). This local government district was created by Wharton County voters in 2001. Its job is to manage and protect groundwater from the Gulf Coast Aquifer, which lies beneath the county.
The district has permit rules that took effect in 2004. Before drilling, contact the CBGCD to find out what permits are needed. The district's office is in Wharton at 109 E. Milam. City water is available in El Campo and Wharton; rural properties often rely on private wells.
