Water Wells
Private Water Wells Are Regulated in Montgomery County
The Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District oversees water wells in Montgomery County to protect the Gulf Coast Aquifer.
Montgomery County gets much of its drinking water from the Gulf Coast Aquifer, which lies underground. The Texas Legislature created the Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District (LSGCD) in 2001 to protect that supply. The district requires permits for many wells. It also tracks monthly water use from permitted wells.
If you are buying rural land with a private well, check whether that well is registered with LSGCD and whether it needs a permit. The district offers weekly watering tips and guides about local aquifers. Call LSGCD at 936-494-3436 or visit lonestargcd.org.
