Flood Risk
Flash floods are a serious danger in Kerr County
The Hill Country around Kerrville sits in what is commonly called Flash Flood Alley — one of the most flash-flood-prone areas in the United States.
Kerr County sits at the headwaters of the Guadalupe River. The steep terrain means rainwater moves fast. When heavy rain falls upstream, rivers and creeks can rise very quickly — sometimes within minutes. Central Texas is widely known as Flash Flood Alley, and Kerr County has a documented history of severe flood events, including catastrophic floods on the Guadalupe River.
The Upper Guadalupe River Authority (UGRA) operates a flood warning program for the area. You can check flood warnings and river conditions at ugra.org/floodwarning. Never drive through flooded roads — this is the most common cause of flood deaths in Texas. Before buying property near the Guadalupe River or any creek, check FEMA flood maps at msc.fema.gov to see if the land is in a floodplain.
