Gus Engeling WMA Offers Hunting, Birding, and Hiking on 11,000 Acres

Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area covers 11,095 acres in northwest Anderson County. It is open to hunting, fishing, bird watching, hiking, and camping with an Annual Public Hunting or Limited Public Use permit.

Gus Engeling WMA is about 21 miles northwest of Palestine in Anderson County. Texas Parks and Wildlife manages the 11,095-acre area as a research and teaching site for the Post Oak Savannah region. The land includes bottomland hardwood forest, wetlands, marshes, and rare sphagnum moss bogs. Researchers have counted 37 mammal species, 156 bird species, and 54 reptile and amphibian species there.

You can hunt white-tailed deer, waterfowl, and small game. You can also fish, hike, bike, camp, and photograph wildlife. A self-guided driving tour has nine stops with educational signs. Anyone 17 or older must carry either an Annual Public Hunting (APH) permit or a Limited Public Use (LPU) permit. You cannot buy these on-site — get them at a license vendor before you go. All visitors must register on-site each day.

During fall and winter drawn hunts, the WMA closes to the public. Check the TPWD website for current open dates because the closure window changes each year. The APH permit also gets you into dozens of other public hunting areas across Texas.
