Exemptions & Ag Valuation

Homestead and Ag Valuation Applications Go to the Appraisal District

Homeowners and ranchers in Stephens County apply for key property tax breaks through the county appraisal district, not the state.

If this is your main home, you can apply for a general residence homestead exemption. State law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption off the school portion of their property tax bill. You must include a copy of your driver's license with the application. File with the Stephens County Appraisal District at 201 S. Rose Ave. in Breckenridge.

Ranchers and farmers can apply for agricultural (1-d-1) special appraisal. This lets qualifying land be taxed on its agricultural production value rather than its market price, which can be significantly lower. Land generally must have been used for ag purposes for five of the past seven years. Exemption amounts and tax rates can change, so verify current figures with the appraisal district or the Texas Comptroller.
