How to claim a homestead exemption on your Angelina County home

If you live in your Angelina County home as your primary residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption to lower your property tax bill — but you must file the paperwork yourself.

Texas does not give homestead exemptions automatically. You must apply. File your application with the Angelina County Appraisal District (the CAD). The CAD is the office that sets the value of your property.

The exemption lowers the taxable value of your home. That means a smaller tax bill. All qualifying homeowners can get the general exemption. Extra exemptions are available if you are 65 or older, if you are disabled, or if you are a disabled veteran.

Use Texas Comptroller Form 50-114 — the Application for Residence Homestead Exemption. You can get it at the Comptroller's website or at the CAD office. File it with Angelina CAD at 105 Miles Way, Suite 300, Lufkin. Check the CAD website for the current filing deadline, since dates can change. The CAD's phone number is 936-634-8456.

Once you are approved, you do not need to reapply every year. But if you move or your situation changes, tell the CAD right away.
