Homestead exemption can lower your property tax bill

If your home in Caldwell County is your main residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces your taxable value.

A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of the home you live in. That means a smaller tax bill. You can file between January 1 and April 30 of the tax year. When you apply, you must include a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID. The address on that ID must match the address of the property.

State law lets you claim up to 20 acres as part of your homestead. If you miss the deadline, you can still file late — up to two years after your taxes become delinquent. Check caldwellcad.org for the current form and for any deadline changes.
