Homestead Exemption
Homestead exemption can lower your tax bill
If your home is your primary residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption that lowers the taxable value of your property.
Texas law requires every school district to take $140,000 off the appraised value of your main home (Tax Code Section 11.13(b)). That cuts the amount you are taxed on. Callahan County also offers a local exemption worth 20% of your home's appraised value, with a $5,000 minimum. If you are 65 or older, you can add an over-65 exemption. That one also freezes the school tax portion of your bill.
You apply once at the Callahan County Appraisal District (CCAD) in Baird. CCAD is the office that sets property values for the county. Bring a copy of your Texas driver's license that shows the property address. The normal deadline is before May 1 of the tax year. Late applications may be allowed in some cases — ask CCAD. Tax rates change every year, so confirm current figures with CCAD before you plan your budget.
