Homestead Exemption

How to Lower Your Tax Bill with a Homestead Exemption

If your home is your primary residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces the taxable value of your property.

A homestead exemption removes part of your home's value before taxes are calculated. School districts in Texas must give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their primary home. Other local taxing units can add more on top of that. There is no fee to apply.

You can only claim a homestead exemption on the home where you live. The general filing deadline is April 30. Once approved, the exemption renews automatically. Homeowners 65 and older or those with disabilities qualify for additional exemptions. File through the El Paso Central Appraisal District.
