Homestead Exemption
File a Homestead Exemption to Lower Your Tax Bill
If you live in your home as your main residence, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces the value used to calculate your taxes.
Texas law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their home's appraised value. That directly lowers the amount your school district taxes. Red River County has five school districts, including Prairiland, Clarksville, and Detroit ISDs.
You apply at the Red River County Appraisal District office in Clarksville. The general deadline to file is before May 1 of the tax year, but check the appraisal district website for the current deadline — it can shift. You must own the property and use it as your main home. The Texas Comptroller's website explains all the rules and has the application form.
