Homestead Exemption

How to Lower Your Tax Bill with a Homestead Exemption

Texas homeowners can reduce their taxable property value by filing a homestead exemption with the San Saba CAD before May 1.

A homestead exemption lowers the value used to calculate your property taxes. To qualify, the home must be your main residence and you must have owned it on January 1 of the tax year. You can only claim one homestead exemption statewide.

Extra exemptions exist for homeowners who are 65 or older or who have a disability. Veterans may also qualify for a separate exemption. File with the San Saba Central Appraisal District. The forms are available on its website, and you will need to include a color copy of your driver's license or state ID showing your home address. Check with the CAD for the current deadline — it is typically May 1.
