Homestead Exemption

How to Apply for a Homestead Exemption in Cameron County

If you own and live in your home, you can apply for a homestead exemption that lowers your taxable value.

To qualify, you must own the home and use it as your main residence as of January 1 of the tax year. You file the application once with the Cameron Appraisal District — you do not need to refile every year unless the CAD asks you to in writing.

The deadline to file is generally April 30 of the tax year. Forms are available at cameroncad.org or by calling (956) 399-9322. Additional exemptions exist for homeowners who are 65 or older or who have a disability — these give you a school tax ceiling so your school taxes cannot increase while you own and live in the home.
