Homestead Exemption
How to get the homestead exemption in Garza County
If this is your main home, you likely qualify for a homestead exemption that lowers what you owe in property taxes.
A homestead exemption removes part of your home's value from taxation. Texas law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their primary residence. Other local taxing units — like the county or city — may offer additional exemptions on top of that.
You apply through the Garza Central Appraisal District, not through the tax collector. The general filing deadline is April 30 of the tax year, though late applications are sometimes accepted. You must own the home and use it as your main address. The CAD website has the application form, or you can get one from the Texas Comptroller's forms page. Check those sites for the current deadline before you file.
