Homestead Exemption
How to get a homestead exemption in Ward County
If your home is your primary residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption that limits how fast your taxable value can rise.
Apply at the Ward County Appraisal District between January 1 and April 30 of the tax year. You will need to show that the property is your primary residence; contact WCAD directly for the current list of required documents. Once granted, the exemption caps your taxable value increase at 10 percent per year. That cap kicks in the year after you first receive the exemption.
If you missed the deadline, you may still be able to file a late application — contact WCAD directly to ask about your options. If you sell the home, the cap ends for the new owner. To protest your appraised value, you must file by June 6 or within 30 days of your Notice of Appraised Value, whichever is later. Check wardcad.org for current deadlines before you act.
