Monahans Sandhills State Park: dunes you can sled in West Texas

A 4,717-acre park of active sand dunes in Ward and Winkler counties offers camping, horseback riding, and sand-disc sledding year-round.

Monahans Sandhills State Park sits on Park Road 41 in Monahans. The dunes here are part of a larger dune field that extends well beyond the park boundary. The park opened in 1957 and is managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Day use costs $4 per adult; children 12 and under are free. The park has 25 campsites with water and electricity, plus dedicated horse camping sites.

The park has no marked trails — you explore the dunes on foot or on horseback. The visitor center covers the area's natural and human history, including evidence of Native American use going back thousands of years. The park runs at capacity between September and March, so reserve your spot in advance at the TPWD reservations site. Call the park at 432-943-2092 or visit the TPWD page for current fees and availability, which can change.
