Homestead Exemption
Lower your tax bill with a homestead exemption
If your home in King County is your primary residence, a homestead exemption can reduce the taxable value and lower your annual property tax bill.
Texas law lets homeowners apply for a residence homestead exemption. To qualify, the home must be your main residence and you must own it. You apply with the King County Appraisal District — not the tax office.
You will need a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID showing the property address. File by April 30 of the tax year to get the exemption that year. Once approved, the exemption stays in place — you do not re-apply each year unless your status changes. The Texas Comptroller's exemption page explains what types are available statewide; KCAD applies them locally.
