Homestead Exemption Basics for Kleberg County Homeowners

If your home is your main residence, you likely qualify for a homestead exemption that lowers your property tax bill.

Texas law requires every school district to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their main home. That means the school district only taxes the value above $140,000. Some other taxing units — like the county or city — may also offer an optional local exemption of up to 20 percent of your home's value.

You apply once with the Kleberg Central Appraisal District. The general deadline is before May 1 of the tax year, but you can file late and still get a partial benefit in some cases. You must own and live in the home as your main residence. Use Form 50-114 from the Texas Comptroller to apply. Check the appraisal district for current local exemption amounts, since those can change.
