Coastal Insurance
Windstorm Insurance Is a Separate Policy in Kleberg County
Kleberg County is in a coastal disaster zone, so standard homeowner's insurance usually does not cover wind and hail — you need a separate TWIA policy.
Kleberg County is one of 14 first-tier coastal counties in Texas. That puts it inside TWIA's designated catastrophe area. TWIA is the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. The state created it to sell wind and hail coverage. It covers property owners who cannot get that protection from regular insurance companies. Most standard home policies in this area exclude wind damage.
Before TWIA will cover a building, it usually must pass a windstorm inspection. New homes and major renovations must meet the Texas Department of Insurance's windstorm building standards. Older homes may still qualify. Check TWIA's eligibility page to see if your property qualifies. Then talk to a licensed insurance agent who knows coastal Texas properties.
