Homestead Exemption
Homestead exemption can lower your school tax bill in Liberty County
Texas homeowners can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces the taxable value of their primary residence.
If your home is your main residence as of January 1, you may qualify for a $140,000 exemption on your school district taxes. Homeowners age 65 or older, or those who are disabled, may get an extra $60,000 school exemption on top of that.
You apply through Liberty CAD at 2030 Sam Houston Street in Liberty (phone: 936-336-5722). You must include a copy of your Texas driver's license or other approved ID. The deadline and exact forms can change, so check the Liberty CAD website before you apply. A homestead exemption is only for the home you actually live in — not a rental or second property.
