Flood Risk

The Trinity River regularly floods parts of Liberty County

Liberty County sits on the Trinity River floodplain, and flooding is a real and recurring risk for homes and roads near the river.

The Trinity River runs through the middle of Liberty County before reaching Trinity Bay. Much of the land near the river is in a designated flood zone. FEMA maintains official flood maps — called Flood Insurance Rate Maps — that show which parcels face higher flood risk. You can look up any address at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center.

If your home is in a high-risk flood zone (labeled Zone A or AE), your lender will likely require flood insurance. Even properties outside those zones have flooded during heavy rain events. FEMA opened a Disaster Recovery Center in Liberty County after severe flooding in 2024. Before you buy property here, check the flood map and ask about the home's flood history.
