Property Tax Exemption

Homestead exemption can cut your tax bill in Montague County

If this is your main home, you likely qualify for an exemption that reduces how much of its value is taxed.

A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your home. That means a smaller tax bill. Texas requires you to live in the home as your main residence to qualify. You apply once with the appraisal district — not the tax office.

State law requires school districts to exempt $140,000 of a home's value. Other local taxing units — like the county or a hospital district — may offer their own exemptions on top of that. The general filing deadline is before May 1 of the tax year, but check with the Montague County Appraisal District for current deadlines. There is no fee to apply.
