File for a Homestead Exemption to Lower Your Tax Bill

Homeowners who live in their home on January 1 can apply for a homestead exemption to lower their tax bill.

If you own and live in your home in Orange County, you likely qualify for a homestead exemption. This cuts the value used to figure your tax bill. You must live in the home on January 1 of the tax year.

Homeowners age 65 or older and people with disabilities can add a second exemption on top of the basic one. Veterans may also qualify based on their disability rating.

To apply, contact the Orange County Appraisal District (OCAD). OCAD is the office that sets your property value. It is separate from the tax office that sends your bill. The usual deadline to apply is May 1. Call OCAD to confirm the deadline for the current year. The county tax website lists each exemption type and what you need to bring.
