Cut Your Property Tax Bill With a Homestead Exemption
If your home in Runnels County is your main residence, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that lowers your taxable value.
A homestead exemption reduces the value your home is taxed on. For school district taxes alone, the exemption can be up to $140,000 off your appraised value. Homeowners age 65 or older also get a $5,000 county exemption plus a freeze on county taxes. A 100% disabled veteran pays no property taxes at all.
You apply through the Runnels County Appraisal District. The deadline is April 30 of the tax year, and you must have owned the home by January 1. You also get a 10% cap — meaning the taxable value can only rise 10% per year while the exemption is active, no matter how much the appraised value jumps. Check the appraisal district website or call 325-365-3583 for current forms and amounts, which can change.
