Texas Homestead Exemption Cuts Your School Tax Bill

If your Carson County home is your main residence, you can apply for an exemption that lowers your school property taxes.

Texas law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their main home. That means school taxes are calculated on a lower value. For example, a home appraised at $250,000 would be taxed as if it were worth $110,000 for school purposes.

Carson County has three school districts: Groom ISD, Panhandle ISD, and White Deer ISD. You file the exemption application with the Carson County Appraisal District, not the school. File before the deadline listed on the appraisal district's website. You only need to file once unless your address changes.
