Wildfire and Severe Wind Are Real Hazards in Carson County

The flat, dry Texas Panhandle sees fast-moving wildfires and severe wind and hail storms that homeowners and buyers should plan for.

Carson County sits on the open High Plains. Dry grass, strong winds, and low humidity make wildfires a real danger here. Fires can move very fast across open land. The Texas Division of Emergency Management tracks active threats and disaster declarations, including wildfire events in the Panhandle.

Severe thunderstorms are also common. They can bring large hail and damaging straight-line winds. These events happen often in this part of Texas. If you are buying property here, read your homeowners insurance policy carefully. Make sure it covers wind and hail. Standard Texas homeowners policies do cover wind, but the deductibles can be high. Note that TWIA — the state's coastal windstorm program — does not apply here. That program is only for properties near the Gulf Coast.
