Oil and Gas Production Has a Long History in Carson County

Carson County has produced oil and gas since 1921, and buyers of land here should check whether mineral rights are included in any sale.

Oil production in Carson County started in late 1921. Over the following decades, the county produced more than 178 million barrels. Production has slowed since its peak, but active wells still operate. The Railroad Commission of Texas, District 10 (Pampa office), regulates oil and gas activity here.

When buying land in Texas, mineral rights are often sold separately from surface rights. That means a previous owner may have already sold the oil and gas rights under the property. You would own the surface but not what is below. Before you buy, ask your title company or attorney to search for any severed mineral interests. Use the Railroad Commission's public GIS viewer to see permitted wells near any property.
