Homestead Exemption

Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your Tax Bill

If you live in the home you own in Kent County, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces your school tax.

Texas law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their main home. This lowers the taxable value of your house for school district taxes. Kent County's only school district is Jayton-Girard ISD.

To get this benefit, you file an application with the Kent County Appraisal District. You need a copy of your Texas driver's license or ID showing the same address as the home. The general filing deadline is April 30 of the tax year — but verify the current deadline with the appraisal district, since dates can change. You can get the form at kentcad.org.
