Property Tax Exemption
Homestead Exemption Cuts Your School Tax Bill
If your Scurry County home is your main residence, a homestead exemption can reduce the taxable value and lower what you owe.
Texas law gives homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their main home for the school part of their tax bill. That means only the value above $140,000 gets taxed for school purposes. This saves most homeowners real money. But you must apply — it is not automatic.
File your application at the Scurry County Appraisal District office in Snyder. The general deadline is before May 1 of the tax year. Extra exemptions exist for people over 65 and for people with disabilities. Check with the appraisal district for current rules, since they can change.
