Homestead Exemption
Homestead Exemption Cuts Your School Tax Bill
Texas law requires school districts to exempt a set amount of your home's value from taxation if it's your main residence.
If you own and live in your home in Wilbarger County, you can apply for a homestead exemption. School districts must remove at least $140,000 from your home's taxable value. That means you are taxed on a lower number, which lowers your school tax.
You file the application with the Wilbarger County Appraisal District — not a state agency. You only need to apply once as long as you stay in the same home. The appraisal district can tell you current deadlines and whether additional local exemptions apply. Additional exemptions may be available for seniors and disabled homeowners.
