Homestead Exemption
How to Lower Your Tax Bill with a Homestead Exemption
If your home in Wood County is your main residence, you likely qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces what you owe in property taxes.
Texas school districts must give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on a primary residence. Wood County and some other local taxing units also offer extra reductions. Wood County itself provides a 20% exemption (with a $5,000 minimum) on top of what the school district gives.
You file once with the Wood County Appraisal District — not every year. The general deadline is April 30, but check woodcad.net for the exact date. You must own the home and live in it as your main address. Once approved, the exemption stays on file. Seniors (65+) and disabled persons can qualify for additional reductions.
