Hunting Licenses

What You Need to Hunt in Wharton County

All hunters in Texas aged 17 and older need a valid hunting license from TPWD, with additional tags required for deer, turkey, and other game.

Most of Wharton County is private farmland and ranch land. To hunt here, you need landowner permission and a Texas hunting license. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) requires anyone 17 or older to have a license to hunt or trap any animal in the state.

You can buy licenses online at tpwd.texas.gov, by phone at 800-895-4248, or at about 1,700 retail locations across Texas including sporting goods and grocery stores. Deer, turkey, and some other game require extra tags in addition to the base license. Seasons and bag limits change each year — always check the current TPWD Outdoor Annual before heading out.
