Hurricane Evacuation

I-37 is the main hurricane evacuation route out of Corpus Christi

TxDOT uses I-37 northbound as the primary evacuation corridor for the Corpus Christi area, and the highway shoulder can be converted into an extra travel lane during a storm.

When a big hurricane threatens Nueces County, most traffic leaves on I-37 heading north. TxDOT can open an evaculane on I-37. That is a wide shoulder turned into a travel lane. It helps more cars get out faster.

TxDOT posts a Corpus Christi hurricane map showing all local evacuation routes. If you live on Padre Island or in Port Aransas, know your route before storm season starts. Do not wait for the storm to figure it out. Call 2-1-1 if you need help getting out. The TxDOT hurricane preparation page is the place to check for current route info and tips.
