Hurricanes and Tropical Storms Reach Wharton County
Wharton County sits about 35 miles from the Gulf Coast and can see strong winds and heavy rain from tropical storms and hurricanes.
Wharton County is inland from the coast but is still in the path of Gulf of Mexico hurricanes. The county is roughly 35 miles from the Gulf. Tropical systems bring heavy rain that causes the Colorado River and smaller creeks to flood. Hurricane Harvey in 2017 caused record river levels at Wharton.
Hurricane season runs June through November. If a major storm threatens the area, you may be asked to evacuate — know your evacuation route. The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) and local authorities issue evacuation orders. Check tdem.texas.gov for preparedness information and sign up for local emergency alerts through Wharton County.
