Keechi Creek WMA gives hunters access to 1,500 acres in Leon County

Keechi Creek Wildlife Management Area is a 1,500-acre public hunting area in northeastern Leon County that is open to hunters with the right state permits.

Keechi Creek WMA sits in northeastern Leon County where Keechi Creek meets Buffalo Creek. The land is mostly bottomland hardwood forest. White-tailed deer, feral hog, gray squirrel, waterfowl, and swamp rabbit are the main game species. Fishing is not allowed there because the site lacks safe water access.

To hunt most species, you need a Texas hunting license plus a Texas Parks and Wildlife Annual Public Hunting Permit. Some hunts — like deer — require applying through a separate drawing. Hunters under 17 have different rules. No restrooms or drinking water are on site. Check the TPWD website for current season dates and permit requirements before you go, since those change year to year.
