The Laguna Madre is one of the few hypersaline lagoons in the world

The Laguna Madre, which borders the eastern side of Nueces County, is a shallow, highly salty lagoon that supports unique wildlife and world-class fishing.

The Laguna Madre stretches along the back side of Padre Island. It is saltier than the Gulf of Mexico, making it one of only a few hypersaline lagoons on earth. The shallow water is critical habitat for redfish, spotted seatrout, and migratory birds.

Padre Island National Seashore protects the Laguna Madre on the barrier island side. Access by kayak or small boat is popular. The lagoon is also a key stop on the Central Flyway for migratory birds — birding in and around the Laguna Madre is notable throughout the year.
