The Brown County Water Improvement District Supplies Most of the Area's Water

Lake Brownwood is the primary drinking water source for Brownwood, Bangs, Early, and surrounding communities, managed by the Brown County Water Improvement District.

The Brown County Water Improvement District (BCWID) is a state-created agency that owns and runs Lake Brownwood. The reservoir sits on Pecan Bayou and Jim Ned Creek, about eight miles north of Brownwood. It can hold about 131,000 acre-feet of water.

BCWID supplies treated water to the City of Brownwood, the City of Bangs, and the Brookesmith Special Utility District. It also supplies untreated water to the City of Early and others.

Lake Brownwood's level can drop during drought. The district has declared drought stages in past dry years; check bcwid.org for current drought stage status and any required water use reductions.

If you are buying property that uses city water in this area, that water comes from this one reservoir. Keep that in mind when thinking about drought risk.

Property outside city service areas may use private water wells or rural water utilities. For information on well permits and water supply, contact the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) or check the Texas Water Development Board's well data. Visit bcwid.org for current lake levels and drought status.
