Lake Lavon Offers Year-Round Fishing Right Inside Collin County

Lake Lavon is a 21,400-acre reservoir in Collin County managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, known especially for crappie fishing in winter and spring.

Lake Lavon sits northeast of Dallas near Wylie. It reaches a maximum depth of 59 feet and was impounded in 1953. The lake holds largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, channel catfish, blue catfish, and sunfish. Crappie fishing is especially popular in winter and spring. White bass are active most of the year, peaking in spring when tributaries are running and off the dam in summer.

The Corps of Engineers operates more than a dozen boat ramps around the lake. Some ramps are open year-round; others are seasonal (April 1 through September 30). Some have entry fees. Check current ramp status with the Corps at (972) 442-3141 before you go, since high water can close ramps without notice. A valid Texas fishing license is required for anglers 17 and older.
