The Railroad Arrived in Laredo in 1881 and Changed Everything

Railroads reached Laredo in 1881, connecting the border city to national markets and launching a period of rapid economic and population growth.

Before 1881, Laredo's economy was based mainly on livestock ranching. When the railroad arrived, Laredo suddenly had a direct link to markets in the U.S. interior and northern Mexico. A local newspaper also started that year. The population grew from about 3,500 in 1880 to over 13,000 by 1900.

The railroad made Laredo a transit hub, and that role has only grown. Today's international trade infrastructure — trucks, rail, and bridges — is built on the foundation the 1881 rail connection established. Laredo's position as a trade city is not an accident; it grew from geography and infrastructure built over more than a century.
