Historic Landmark

Lavaca County's 1899 courthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places

The Lavaca County Courthouse in Hallettsville was built in 1899 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

The Lavaca County Courthouse sits in Hallettsville. Texas architect Eugene T. Heiner designed it in the Romanesque Revival style. Workers built it in 1899 using yellow and gray limestone. It has a tall central clocktower. Square towers with pyramid-shaped roofs flank the front entrance. The courthouse has been in use ever since it opened.

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Hallettsville became the county seat in 1852 after a contested election. German and Czech settlers arrived in large numbers in the late 1800s. The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway came in 1887. That railway made Hallettsville the main trading center for the area.
