Low-Water Crossings Close Fast During Heavy Rain
Many rural roads in Comal County cross creeks and rivers at low-water crossings that can flood quickly and are dangerous to drive through.
The Texas Hill Country has many roads that dip down to cross streams at ground level. These low-water crossings can go from dry to several feet of rushing water in minutes after a storm upstream. The water moves fast and can sweep away a car.
Texas law makes it illegal to drive around barriers blocking flooded roads. Penalties include a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 180 days in jail. The saying used here: "Turn around, don't drown." Check the Comal County emergency information page or a local alert system before driving rural roads after heavy rain.
