Low-water crossings and flash floods are a real driving hazard in Burleson County

Burleson County's rural FM roads include low-water crossings that can become impassable — and dangerous — during the fast-rising flash floods common across Central Texas.

Flash flooding is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in Texas. Burleson County sits within the Brazos River watershed, and many farm-to-market roads cross creeks and drainageways at low-water crossings. These crossings can go from dry to several feet deep within minutes when thunderstorms move through.

Texas law and safety experts urge the same message: Turn Around, Don't Drown. As little as six inches of fast-moving water can make a vehicle lose control. Texas law bans driving around barriers placed at flooded crossings; violations can bring a fine up to $2,000 and up to 180 days in jail.

Check road conditions before and during travel in wet weather. The TxDOT DriveTexas site at drivetexas.org shows road closures and conditions statewide in real time. The National Weather Service issues flash flood watches and warnings for Burleson County through its Fort Worth/Dallas office; sign up for alerts at weather.gov.
